Unpacking the score
In these lectures, we’ll examine selected works by Bach, Sor, Regondi, and José through three different viewpoints: music theory, performance, and pedagogy. A music theorist, guitarist, and guitar teacher will each share their approach to the same piece. This format allows you to hear how different professionals analyze and interpret classical guitar repertoire. Each piece will be discussed from theoretical, practical, and teaching perspectives. Join us to explore these works through multiple lenses and see how different approaches can inform your own playing and understanding.

Fabio Scarduelli: Brazilian Sonatas for Guitar
Sonatas have played a significant role in music history, particularly following the Classical period, when their traditional form was firmly established. Since then, composers have written numerous sonatas for the guitar, including Mario Giuliani and Fernando Sor in the 19th century, as well as Joaquín Rodrigo and Alberto Ginastera, among others, in the 20th century. Although the guitar cannot rival the piano in terms of the number and prominence of ist sonatas -espacially when considering the contributions of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven – it nonetheless possesses a rich repertoire of sonatas that enhance its musical standing. In Brazil, many distinguished composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Guerra-Peixe, Almeida Prado, Sérgio Vasconcellos-Corrêa, and Pedro Cameron, have contributed significantly to this body of work. The sonatas of these composers are highly sophisticated, featuring well-defined structures, rhythmic complexity, and diverse stylistic influences. This lecture will provide an overview of Brazilian guitar sonatas, examining selected works with a particular focus on their technical and stylistic aspects. We will seek to demonstrate why these compositions deserve greater recognition in both performances and recordings.
